Grok and Grok Build

I use Grok in its apps and Grok Build, xAI's terminal coding agent.

What it is

Grok is xAI's AI assistant, available through the Grok website and apps1. Grok Build is a coding agent that runs in the terminal. xAI's launch post calls it "a new coding agent that runs right from your terminal"2. xAI's docs say you can use it through an interactive TUI, headlessly in scripts, or through the Agent Client Protocol3.

My plan

I haven't listed my Grok tier or how many subscriptions I have yet. Here's what xAI sells.

As of November 5, 2026, xAI's October 12, 2026 post, "Introducing The X Subscription," lists these tiers4:

TierMonthly US priceIncluded usage
Free$0Limited
Plus$8Base
Premium$304x Plus
Super$10015x Plus
Ultra$20050x Plus

That post says Premium carries "the benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and X Premium+, previously $90/month combined"4. xAI's Grok FAQ still names two older subscriptions, SuperGrok and SuperGrok Heavy, and doesn't list their prices1. Grok Build's May 2026 launch was open to "all SuperGrok and X Premium Plus subscribers"2.

What it's good at

xAI says Grok Build supports plan-based review and headless mode, and runs on grok-4.7 by default2,3. The limits xAI states are that Grok Build launched as an "early beta" and that its launch post lists no usage caps or pricing for Grok Build itself2. The Grok Build docs don't say whether a subscription is required3.

What I use it for

The Grok apps and Grok Build.

The company

Elon Musk founded xAI on March 9, 2023, with a founding team of 11 researchers, though by late March 2026 all co-founders other than Musk had left. Its headquarters is in Palo Alto, California5. In March 2025 xAI acquired X Corp. in an all-stock deal, and in February 2026 SpaceX acquired xAI in a stock-only deal that made it a wholly owned subsidiary5. Its funding included a $6 billion round in December 2024 that brought total funding to over $12 billion5.

The company has been renamed since: the same article says SpaceXAI in July 2026 and SpaceX Super Intelligence in October 20265. xAI's docs now call the company "SpaceXSI"3.
